STATE MAHILA Congress president Shobha Oza has claimed that the woman who had jumped into her husband’s pyre at Tulsipar village on August 21, had committed ‘Sati’ but the State Government was denying the same.

Addressing a press conference after visiting the village on the second day of her tour to the district, to inquire into the
‘Sati’ incident, she said the woman, Janak Rani, had made preparations to commit ‘Sati’.

Oza said during the Congress regime a ‘Sati’ incident had occurred in Patna-Tamoli village of Panna district. The then Government had accepted the truth and imposed economic punishment on villagers and later the Congress Government had also started relief works in the village.

She also said the Deori BJP MLA, Ratan Singh Silarpur, had admitted that it was an incident of ‘Sati’, but the Government was denying the same. Condemning the ‘Sati’ incident, she demanded a high-level inquiry by a High Court judge.

Meanwhile, the State Women’s Commission has inferred that the Tulsipar incident was a spontaneous reaction of a beloved wife, who committed suicide on the funeral pyre of her husband and not a case of Sati.

The woman, Janakrani had jumped into the funeral pyre of her husband on August 21. Addressing a press conference after visiting the village, Mrs. Relam said the incident was a “self motivated immolation” case. The Sarpanch of the village, Bhawan Singh also agreed that it was not a sati case, she claimed.

She also denied the allegation of the state Mahila congress president, Shobha Ojha that the commission was working as a mouthpiece of the state government and asserted that the SWC was working according to laid norms.
