Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said on Monday that Italy was "available to command the UN mission" in Lebanon, the Ansa news agency reported.

"I confirmed that Italy was available to command the UN mission" Prodi told journalists, adding that he had a long conversation with the United Nations Secretary-General.

Prodi also called for a new UN resolution "with a specific mandate, specific contents and a very clear definition of the alliances.
