Jammu and Kashmir government has called for familiarisation of cost-effective water harvesting techniques and multiple cropping system to give a boost to agriculture and horticulture production in the state.

Addressing a divisional kharif conference here yesterday, state's minister for agriculture Ajaz Ahmad said people should be made aware of the cost-effective techniques of water harvesting to enhance agriculture and horticulture production.

He called for research and development towards multiple cropping system with a focus on improving water management system to utilise available irrigation potential optimally.

The conference was convened to draw a roadmap for kharif season. A review about procurement, availability and distribution of paddy, pulses, fodder and vegetable seeds and fertilisers was also held.

The minister stressed the need for evolving drought prone varieties of seed and plant materials and further reactivating agriculture extension wings to keep farmers abreast with the latest advancements in farm practices.
