After more than two months of hectic negotiations and intermittent periods of strike by junior doctors, both from Jammu and Kashmir regions, the government has said the talks between the two have failed.
"After repeated assurances that grievances of the doctors will be looked into positively, the striking doctors have refused to resume work in hospitals where the general public is facing great difficulties," said Abdul Rahim Rather, finance minister in a hurriedly called press conference to apprise people about the status of the talks.
The government has blamed "impatient and obstinate doctors" for the failure. "We asked the doctors that the government will hold a Cabinet meeting before October 31 to look into it positively, but they did not resume their duty," said Rather, who is also a member of the six-member committee to look into the case.
The finance minister said the doctors had broken the informal agreement reached with the government in August that a solution would be hammered before the Secretariat moved to Jammu.
The government is now charting out a contingency plan to meet any eventuality arising in the backdrop of snapped talks. "We will take every measure to take care of patients and general public, who have been facing the brunt of the strike," said Rather.
