Brigadier Gurmeet Singh, Brigadier General Staff of 15 Corps, said 400 militants are preparing to cross the border. He said 250-300 militants belonging to various outfits are already active in Jammu and Kashmir.

Singh, however, said, “The army is fully prepared to counter infiltration.”

The senior officer said that of the 42 training camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, 32 are currently in operation.

Referring to the gun battle in the Keran sector on Saturday, Singh said, “The area where the encounter took place is at a high altitude with rugged mountains and is currently under 12-15 feet of snow. The terrorists were heavily armed and had the latest communication and navigation equipment, indicating support of intelligence and government agencies across the Line of Control.”

The killed militants belonged to the Lashkar-e-Tayyeba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Harkatul Mujahideen, he said.

“This year we have occupied additional counter-infiltration positions and commenced repair of border fencing earlier (than usual),” he said.
