Six persons were killed and over a dozen wounded in firing by the army and the police to break the demonstrators in northern Bandipora district headquarters and Srinagar's Lasjan outskirts on Tuesday.
Police sources said that hundreds of residents defied curfew restrictions and took to the streets to mourn the death of senior Hurriyat leader, Shaikh Abdul Aziz, who was killed in police firing while leading a cross-LoC march.
They said that army fired upon the demonstrators to disperse them. Eight persons were reported to have sustained bullet injuries. Three of them died on the spot, sources said.
In a separate incident police fired upon a mob of protestors at Lasjna on the outsikrts of Srinagar, injuring five people. They were rushed to Srinagar's SMHS hospital where two of the injured succumbed to their injuries. Unofficial reports said that one more person injured in firing in Bandipora succumbed to injuries in hospital.
Police also fired on protestors at Rainawari in Srinagar, wounding three persons. Latest reports said that one of the injured persons succumbed to his injuries.
Reports pouring in from other parts of the Valley said that hundreds and thousands of people defied curfew restrictions and hit the streets in protest against the death of the Hurriyat leader. His body was kept at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid for burial.
People in several parts of the old city have come out of their houses, and gathered at Jamia Masjid to participate in the funeral. Mirwaiz Ummer Farooq would lead the burial prayers.
Reports said that residents were using public address system of local mosques asking people to defy curfew and come out of their houses. People also took to the streets in Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama, Qazigund, Kulgam, Tral and several others places.
