He has tremendous goodwill. And he’s acknowledged as a terrific dancer and actor. But some- where along the line, despite praise for Salaam Namaste, Jaaved Jaaferi lost his way. The funny-sad man interviewed by Shaikh Ayaz
How’s the second phase of your career going?
If you choose to call this my second coming, then it is. But frankly, I’ve never been away from acting. It’s always been my first love. So, it’s a misconception that I was off from acting just because everyone thought I was into TV. You know, I’ve this habit of staying afloat.
Whether it’s the song Mum-bhai or Salaam Namaste, quality work has always happened. Fortunately, I’ve some really promising films (Dhamaal, The Forest and Victoria 203) lined up now.
Do you regret the way your career took shape ?
I do at times. Par kya kar sakte hai? I’ve just gone with the tide. Still I consider myself lucky because I multi-task, unlike other actors. I’ve done voice overs, I’ve done subtitles for English films, I’ve been a choreographer and a concert host.. I’ve received compliments from Jayaji (Bachchan), Mr Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Their appreciation matters to me because I respect them tremendously.
Do you see yourself trapped in comedy?
I’ve done my share of serious roles, like the ones in Fire and Me and Sam. Some one very rightly said, while comparing America and Europe, in the former, you’re known for your most recent work, and in the latter for your greatest work.
I’m stuck in that rut (Laughs). Especially after Salaam Namaste, I’ve been trapped as a comedian. I’m just an actor, ready to play any role – be it negative or positive.
You’ve been toying with the idea of getting into direction, haven’t you?
I want to make a film on dance, because it’s a passion with me.
