Action star Jackie Chan says Asian filmmakers need to make movies with broad appeal across the continent to compete with the US blockbusters.

The Hong Kong actor was at the Cannes Film Festival to promote The Myth, an "Indiana Jones"-style adventure. It was shot in China and India and also features Bollywood sex symbol Mallika Sherawat.
The Rush Hour star says he was attracted to the script because of its storyline about India.
"Especially in Asia right now, we do need to unite together," Chan said at a news conference Tuesday. "We keep losing audiences because American movies are so strong."
"They have big production, big promotion," he said. "Asian films, we don't have this kind of money. So we need to unite strong markets like India, like Korea. Then we can survive." Chan plays a Qin dynasty general and an archaeologist in the movie, while Sherawat plays an Indian princess.
Sherawat says Bollywood cinema will always be most important to her, though she is open to trying roles elsewhere. "I would like to be a part of global cinema," she said.
