The police on Thursday said it retrieved the body of a Jash-e-Muhammad militant two days after an encounter in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
According to a police spokesman, the police retrieved the body in an orchard in Tral area. “The militant was injured during an encounter with the Tral police and the Army on May 6,” said the spokesman.
Furnishing the details of the encounter, the police spokesman said, “The Awantipora police and Army laid an ambush near Dadsara-Amirabad on May 6 following a tip-off regarding movement of militants during the night hours.”
“Late in the evenings, the ambush team reported some movement,” he added.
“The team asked them to stop and reveal their identity but the militants retaliated with heavy fire, ensuing an encounter,” said the police spokesman
However, the militants taking advantage of darkness and vegetation managed to escape.
“Following the encounter, the ambush team detected bloodstains on the trails of the fleeing militants. The next morning police recovered an AK 47 rifle near the encounter site believed to be that of the injured militant,” he said.
The body was recovered in Thursday from an orchard at Panzoo, Tral. “The slain militant has been identified as Syed Mawia, a foreign militant of Jaish e Muhammad. He was one of the militants involved in the killing of Numbardar Mohammad Anwar at village Amlar, Tral,” said the police.

Anwar was killed on the eve of polls in south Kashmir on April 23.
Meanwhile, as the news of the killing spread in Tral, local downed their shutters. Several youth clashed with the security forces. The police used force to disperse the youth. A shutdown was later observed in the town.
