He claimed it were the Congress activists who created disturbances on the campus over the students body election result, after which the unfortunate incident took place in which a professor died.

Talking to the Hindustan Times at the State BJP office, Jatia said the Congress wanted to capitalise on the student bodies’ elections in a bid to energise itself but it created so much disturbances on the campus at Ujjain that it led to the unfortunate incident.

Jatia, who belongs to Ujjain, said the inquiry into the incident should also look into the circumstances that led to the incident. After the entry of Congress workers on college campus the result process was withheld for five hours and this resulted in resentment among the students, he claimed.

When asked whether he was giving a clean chit to the ABVP by blaming the Congress, and whether his statement could influence the police investigation and magisterial inquiry into the incident, Jatia said he did not think so. “I did not speak a single word for the past three days but was forced to do so given the Congress’s continuous attempts to politicise the matter and malign the BJP”, he said.

When asked whether the BJP had identified the antecedents of the activists responsible for the professor’s death he said the party was yet to do so.

Interestingly, while Jatia spoke of the Congress hand, State BJP spokesman Umashankar Gupta did not name the Congress and yet he also seemed giving a clean chit to the ABVP. Gupta said those responsible for the incident spread canard against the government.
