DISAPPOINTED OVER the poor response to the People’s Democratic Front (PDF), prominent Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawad quit its chairmanship. Jawad, while leaving the party in disgust, held both Shia and Sunni Ulema (clerics) responsible for the PDF fiasco.

Talking to newsmen here on Saturday, Jawad said he contacted a large number of clergies for support but none of them came forward. He said these clerics could not dare to oppose the State Government because of their vested interest. Jawad said even some of them launched a tirade against him for setting up the PDF.

Jawad said under his leadership the PDF was against the Samajwadi Party, the Congress and the BSP and hence clerics did not join the front. Even some people tried to convert the PDF into a Shia-Sunni issue. Jawad said he had been trying for Muslim unity, which had received big jolt because of such propaganda. Jawad said he would be happy if PDF flourished after his departure.

With Jawad’s departure, the first much-publicized Muslim front is on way to disintegration. The cleric, who enjoys good following among Shias, was the only recognizable face in the front. Some people with hardly any following had clung on to him to serve their vested interest.

However, PDF general secretary Nihaluddin claimed that the front was intact.

Expressing shock over the resignation he said Jawad should have taken the constituents into confidence. Interestingly, PDF partners were holding a conference in Nanpara (Bahraich) when Jawad announced his resignation here.
