ACTIVISTS OF the Janata Dal United staged a dharna at the district magistrate office and handed over a six-point charter of demand to be forwarded to the Governor. They demanded employment in universities and settlement of land issue between the farmers and the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authorities (GIDA).

The farmers whose lands were acquired by the administration had been rendered jobless, they said. They also demanded to restart the suspended development project in the district.
Addressing the dharna district president of the party’s youth wing Sunil Kumar Dubey said that the farmers, workers and youths of eastern UP were being neglected attitude by successive governments. He said that the government officials were exploiting the in name of industrial development of the region.
State secretary of the party Gautam Lal Srivastav urged Union and the State governments to be sensitive towards the farmers and youths’ plight. He said that no sincere steps were taken by the governments for development of this region.
State vice-president of the party Ashwani Pandey and district president Umesh Shahi said that the factory owners at GIDA were harassing the workers and not paying the minimum wages. The exploitation of farmers and workers should be checked, they added. They further said that the weaker section of the society was not provided with the BPL card.
Party leader Abdul Ghafoor, Mohan Tiwari, Ravi Pratap Sharma and others urged Union Government to reconsider the decision to increase the prices of petroleum gas and diesel.
