JE raging, 19 more hospitalised

THE INFLUX of patients suffering from suspected Japanese Encephalitis (JE) continued at the BRD Medical College here on Saturday as 19 more patients were brought here from various districts of Gorakhpur division. The number of JE patients has increased considerably and for the first time 19 patients in a day have been hospitalised at the medical college this year.

The number of JE patients has increased considerably and for the first time 19 patients in a day have been hospitalised at the medical college this year.

Meanwhile, three patients succumbed to the dreaded disease in the paediatric ward of the college, taking the death toll to 51. Sixty-nine patients are undergoing treatment and so far 354 patients have been brought here for treatment in the last four months.

Meanwhile, in the wake of encephalitis spread, 10 physicians of Provincial Medical and Health Services (PMHS) along with 9 staff nurse and seven fourth-class employees were attached to BRD Medical College. Divisional commissioner Dr Moolchand Yadav, meanwhile, claimed that all necessary steps had been taken to provide medical services to patients and that the situation was well under control. Additional director health Umakant Prasad also claimed that there was no dearth of physicians in the medical college.

Prasad claimed medical college staff and district hospital were providing best possible treatment to suspected cases Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and efficiency would improve with a team of PMHS physicians around. He claimed the serum of 32 suspected JE cases was examined and reports in all cases was negative. Dr Yadav directed all CMOs and those in charge of community health centres to gear up to handle suspected JE cases. He denied the report that there were any differences or confusion between the medical staff and administrative staff over spread of fresh JE cases and claimed that fogging was being conducted in all districts.
