Jethmalani takes oath as RS member

Jethmalani, nominated by the President, took oath as member of RS along with three other newly elected members.

Former Union Minister Ram Jethmalani, nominated by the President, on Wednesday took oath as member of Rajya Sabha along with three other newly elected members.

Samjwadi Party members Banwari Lal Kanchhal and Veerpal Yadav were the two other members, who were elected for the first time from Uttar Pradesh who took office in Parliament House chamber of Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

This will be the third term for Jethmalani, who was nominated on Monday. Earlier, he was elected to the Upper House in 1988 and 2000.

BJP member Rudra Narayan Pani, who has been re-elected from Orissa and took oath in Oriya, was first elected from the state in 2004 against a vacancy.

With today's oath-taking, a total number of 48 elected/ re-elected members have taken oath out of the 58 elected in the March 28, 2006 biennial polls.

The remaining 10 members, including HRD Minister Arjun Singh would be taking oath at a later date, or when the Parliament resumes its session on May 10, 2006.

Union Ministers PC Gupta, Minister of state for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachouri, Congress chief whip in Rajya Sabha V Narayan Swami and CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury were present on the occasion.
