The window and frame through which Lee Harvey Oswald shot and killed former US president John F Kennedy was sold on auction site Ebay for more than $3 million.

The piece was auctioned by Caruth Byrd, whose family owned the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, where Oswald fired the shots that killed JFK on Nov 22, 1963, from the sixth floor.

The mystery buyer, listed as "r.seydel" and based in the Netherlands, paid $3,001,501 to acquire the window, well past the starting bid of $100,000 for the piece on Friday, according to his page on Ebay's website.

The window was taken out of the depository weeks after Kennedy's assassination and held for more than two decades by Caruth Byrd's father Harold. When Caruth inherited the item after his father's death, he had it placed in a museum in Dallas commemorating the assassination, where it has been for over 10 years.

Like all the details surrounding JFK's death, there are conspiracies that the window is not authentic. But Byrd said on the Ebay page auctioning the piece that he will provide the winning bidder "all the official documentation and contracts related to the window and frame's authenticity".
