Rakesh Sinha, a reporter with a local daily, was on his way home when unidentified gunmen pumped bullets into his stomach from close range at about 10.30 pm on Sunday.

Police said Sinha was initially taken to a local hospital and then transferred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi.

According to doctors, Sinha's liver was badly damaged by the bullets and his condition was serious.

"We are investigating the case with two angles in mind. First we are trying to find out whether Sinha had personal enmity with anyone and second could be a professional reason," a police official told IANS on phone from Lohardagga.

Various journalists' associations in the state have condemned the incident and demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits.
