The Jharkhand police recovered two dozen army camouflage jackets from a forest near the state capital on Friday, part of a consignment being smuggled to a Maoist group.
Police said the jackets, packed in a bag marked 'Ganesh Army Store, Ranchi', were thrown out of a moving vehicle near Vrinda village in Khunti district, about 70 km from Ranchi, after its occupants spotted security personnel at a check post.
The consignment, they said, was meant for the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) second-in-command Jiten Gudia.
Jharkhand inspector general of police (IG) Anurag Gupta said a probe had been ordered. The jackets bore the tag of the Indian Army.
A police team that raided the Ganesh Army Store in Ranchi could not arrest its owner.
"We have yet not arrested the owner but he is under our scanner," SDPO Khunti Deepak Sharma said.
In 2013, Maoist rebels wearing CRPF camouflage jackets had trapped a posse of security forces in Katiya forest in Latehar district and carried out an explosion using a surgically implanted explosive device inside the body of one jawan.
The attack had killed 14 security personnel.
The PLFI is among the deadliest Maoist groups in Jharkhand.
