Taking a cue from Rajasthan, which has converted its forts and palaces into a flourishing hospitality industry, Jharkhand has invited developers of the Neemrana Fort to look at similar possibilities in the state.
Hoping to develop its old forts and palaces into heritage hotels, the government this week hosted representatives from the Neemrana Hotels group, which has restored several old homes and forts in the country, including its flagship property, the grand, rambling Neemrana Fort a short distance from New Delhi.
Government officials said the Neemrana group surveyed some old forts and showed interest in the Ratu Fort, seven km from here, and the Ramgarh Fort, 45 km away.
"The government is assessing the proposal," said an official of the art and culture department.
At present, Jharkhand has no heritage hotel.
The state government is focusing on the hotel industry after getting huge investment proposals in the steel, mining and power sectors.
The government has also approached the Taj group to set up its first five-star hotel in Ranchi.
"We want to develop the state as an industrial hub. There is vast potential in the hotel and tourism sector. We are determined to tap such potential areas," Chief Minister Arjun Munda said.
