On his way to winning gold, though Thomas sailed over 2.22m to erase the old meet mark, he wasn't successful in his endeavour to break the national mark of 2.25m.

In all his three attempts, he couldn't generate good rhythm to sail over 2.26m, which denied him the additional benefit.

Even defending champion Harishankar Roy representing Jharkhand in the event lost his sequence to take himself to new heights that saw him slip to second spot. He couldn't go beyond the 2.19m mark. S Harshith of ONGC was third at 2.16m.

Favourite to win the title, India's star thrower Om Prakash of ONGC eventually finished third in men shot put.

Prakash whose season best is 20.69m, had a best throw of 17.81m that guaranteed him third place in the event that was won by teammate Jasdeep Singh, who recorded a throw of 18.41m. Railways' Satyender Kumar was placed second with an effort of 17.85m.

The eighth-seeded Kashyap, who is a Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist, staved off the stiff challenge posed by Gao with a 21-13, 14-21, 21-19 win that came after an hour and 18 minutes of slogging.
