At least 225 medical teachers at four state run-hospitals in the city have announced a mass casual leave on Thursday.
Senior doctors associated with the Maharashtra Senior Medical Teachers Association (MSMTA) have decided to stay away from work protesting their demands for a better pay scale weren’t met.
“We want the provisions of the Sixth Pay Commission to be implemented. Despite several requests since last year, the government hasn’t pay heed to us,” said Dr Bharati Kondvilkar, spokesperson, MSMTA.
State transport employees too were protesting for implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission provisions. While their demands were met, the indefinite strike by college teachers for the same is still on.
Kondvilkar said that no surgeries, including emergencies, would be performed by medical teachers between 6 am to 6 pm at St George, GT, Cama and JJ hospitals where the strike is on.
“Residents can handle emergencies, if they can’t patients can be transferred to civic hospitals. If there is a disaster situation, we’re ready to help,” added Kondvilkar.
Besides better pay, doctors are demanding time-bound promotions, performance incentives and career progression schemes.

“The honorary doctors and juniors like resident doctors would be working. But routine surgeries that were scheduled tomorrow would have to be cancelled,” said Dr R.S. Inamdar, dean of JJ group of hospitals.
According to a senior doctor, at least 150 routine surgeries have been postponed at these four hospitals.
