As tension prevailed on the Jamia Milia Islamia University Campus following violence over admissions, authorities on Wednesday ordered indefinite closure of the varsity and vacation of the hostels within two days.
Jamia Vice Chancellor Mushirul Hasan said the varsity has been shut "sine die" following violence on Tuesday evening over the issue of admissions to students against whom disciplinary action had been taken earlier.
The varsity campus witnessed large scale violence on Tuesday evening after a student leader tried to meet Hasan in connection with admission of some people who the varsity authorities claim were "known trouble makers."
"In the past, previous vice-chancellors had denied admission to students on disciplinary grounds. The Academic Council has also rejected their representation for admission last week," Hasan told reporters.
Meanwhile, a group of students led by outgoing chairman of the Students' Union Shams Parvez filed a complaint with the police about being threatened by the varsity authorities.
Students also held up traffic on the Mohammad Ali road adjoining the University and police were called in to disperse the crowd. Five persons were injured in the fracas.

{{/usCountry}}Hasan claimed the university suffered losses worth Rs 50 lakh due to the rampaging of the campus by a mob.
He said some "10-20 people, who had been rusticated from the university by previous vice chancellors are trying to join the varsity with intention to wrest control of the Students' Union for small time political gains."
"We will not grant admission to those who have been declared persona non-grata," he said.
