Sample this: The brother-in-law of a journalist working for a prominent English daily was being terrorised by a man with half a dozen criminal cases against him.
The journalist's relative manages a cable network in Dhumanganj. The alleged criminal working for another cable network in the same area had pointed a revolver at the journo's said relative about 20 days ago. The matter was reported to the police. But no action was taken. The journo approached the IG.
The alleged criminal was arrested and booked. Out on bail the alleged criminal lodges a cooked up FIR this time at the Civil Lines police station under section 307 ( attempted murder) against the said relative who has no crime registered against him ever at any police station.
Cops who otherwise show no enthusiasm in such cases acted with alacrity.
They took the pain of arresting the accused late Sunday night. Instead of bringing the accused to Civil Lines police station they keep him in the lock-up of Shivkuti police station. This system of keeping an accused in the lock-up of another police station, it may be mentioned here, is observed only in cases when the accused is a big criminal carrying out an organised crime.
The mediaperson talked to the SSP and the CO. Both said, they would look into it. But took no action, it was alleged.
In case of an attempted murder cops carry out an investigation first and act later. But in this case no such investigation was carried out.
By the time a group of mediapersons met the IG who was apparently shocked to hear the story the accused was produced before the court, denied bail, and sent to Naini Central Jail.
Mediapersons while expressing their anguish over the incident alleged that whatever has happened was the result of a report which the journo wrote and which appeared on the front page of the English daily recently. There were no wild unsubstantiated allegations in the report. It simply narrated the falling standards amongst a section of top police officers due to which SSP Farrukhabad Rahul Asthana was slapped by his subordinates, ASP Rajesh Krishna was arrested for taking bribe during a recruitment drive in Azamgarh, Section 302 IPC was slammed against ASP Rae Bareli Rakesh Shankar and allegation of extraneous considerations and harassment were levelled by five SOG cops in a writ petition filed by them against the SSP Allahabad Vijay Singh Meena . The cops have alleged that the SSP transferred them mid-session because they refused to fulfil his wish.
Meanwhile, the IG taking serious note of the matter immediately directed the DIG to get an investigation in the matter carried out by a CO from outside the district.
