A journalist of a leading Assam daily was on Saturday shot dead by unidentified insurgents in Lower Assam's Kokrajhar district, official sources said.

Jagajit Saikia (35), the Kokrajhar district local correspondent of the popular Guwahati-based oldest Assamese daily `Dainik Asam', was fired at near a pharmacy in the heart of Kokrajhar town, the sources said.

The insurgents fired six rounds, they said.
Saikia was immediately rushed to the RNB Civil hospital in Kokrajhar where he succumbed to his injuries.
He was the local correspondent of the daily published by the Assam Tribune group for several years, the sources said.
Saikia is survived by his wife and a minor child.
A man-hunt has been launched to track the assailants, the sources added.
