In a bid to strengthen their fight against the state government, Jadavpur University students are planning to organise a citizen’s convention on Wednesday, which would be attended by a large number of intellectuals having differences with Didi’s leadership.

The event is expected to be a hit show with its Facebook page already getting an overwhelming response.

Students would also demand the resignation of vice-chancellor, Abhijit Chakraborty in the convention.

Several teachers were present in the university campus to prepare for Wednesday’s convention.

When asked about whether the government would ask the VC to step down, state education minister Partha Chatterjee played safe and said, “The government will not remove the VC unless he himself decides to resign.”

This statement came on a day when seven VCs of various state-run universities held a press conference in solidarity with Chakraborty and appealed to the students to withdraw their agitation. They, however, refrained from commenting on the police crackdown on JU students in the wee hours on September 17.
