THE EFFICIENCY of junior level police officials in redressing cases of atrocities against women and those belonging to the backward classes is once again in question. It has also become routine affair for the police top brass to receive complaints against junior cops.
Today the problem came to the fore once again when two minor girls of the backward class lodged a complaint with the SSP office.
The girls, in their complaint, stated that last Monday a village thug from the upper caste had tried to assault them sexually. The girls added that the assailant fled only after they attacked him with a sickle.
The girls, accompanied by their father Chote Lal, an agricultural labourer, met SSP P C Meena and sought protection from the assailant, who had been torturing them since last Monday.
Chote Lal also informed the SSP that the police outpost and the Ghatampur police station officials had refused to register their complaint. He added that even after seven days of the incident an FIR had not been registered.

{{/usCountry}}In Kalyanpur, two days back some police personnel, including a sub-inspector of the local police station, raided a house and attempted to rape a woman. These men also threatened the victim of dire consequences if the matter was reported to the higher authorities. The Kalyanpur circle officer has been deputed to investigate the matter and submit a report within two days.
Ironically, the National Commission for SC/ST and the Kanpur zone police had recently organised a three-day workshop to train station officers to pay special attention towards cases of atrocity against backward classes.
The increasing insensitivity of junior level cops shows that the exercise had little impact on them.
