With Lucknow University authorities doing nothing to enforce the Supreme Court ban on ragging, such incidents just might turn into the order of the day. There were many such incidents on Monday in which fresh students at LU manhandled their seniors when the latter tried to rag them in the name of “introduction”. The fresher alleged that if LU could not tame senior students, they would have to take charge.

In the first incident, a BA II student in the Geography Department alleged that he had been thrashed by some fresher. When it came to identifying the accused, the senior could not point out which one it was. When probed, it came to light that it was the BA II student who had misbehaved with a new student in reaction to which the juniors hit back. When news spread, proctorial members rushed to the department. There were no teachers while seniors and juniors were seen quarrelling. A senior student even gave a written complaint alleging junior students had been nasty to them. The team asked the coordinator of the course to give a detailed report on the incident.

Ragging was also reported from M Sc Chemistry section where some senior M Sc students were chased away by freshers to thwart a ragging bid. Parent of one of the freshers, in his complaint to the proctor’s office, has informed that seniors have been humiliating his daughter in the name of ragging.

When contacted, proctor AN Singh admitted that in Geography Department, some senior student was roughed up by the fresher but he pleaded ignorance about the other two incidents. Singh said: “We’re keeping a strict vigil on the campus to ensure a strict adherence to the SC order on the ragging issue and strict action would be taken against the guilty.”

The proctor added: “All members of the proctorial team are keeping watch at every nook and corner of the campus. We expect juniors to come forward and lodge a complaint against the seniors and let varsity to take action against those who are guilty.” But, there are no takers among the students of generation-Y to take the proctor’s advice.
