The police officers who were criticised for ‘sloppy’ investigation in the Jessica Lall murder case finally had a reason to smile after the high court verdict on Monday.

After being pilloried by the media and subjected to intense police questioning, the officers had the satisfaction of seeing the court delivering its judgment based on evidence they had collected.

Feeling vindicated, the officers struck back at the special investigation team that probed the case afresh. “The whole exercise to institute a special investigation team to investigate botching up of evidence was unnecessary,” said Director General of Police, Arunachal Pradesh, Amod Kanth, the then Joint Commissioner of police.

The travails of the officers began soon after the sessions court pronounced its judgment in February. It started with Surender Sharma, the officer investigating the case, being transferred to the security wing. On April 28, the special investigation team inspector interrogated Raman Lamba, who was then with the special staff of south district.

On May 5, Lamba was transferred from the Special Cell to the first Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police. Senior police officers had then called the transfers ‘routine,’ although their timing told a different tale.
