The Medical Education Department has written to Justice Gupta in this regard and is awaiting his acceptance. “We received Justice Gupta’s name from the High Court and have communicated the appointment to him,’’ Principal Secretary of Medical Education Department I M Chahal confirmed to the Hindustan Times. She, however, added that there has been no word yet on acceptance from the retired chief justice.

The fresh appointment to the post of chairman of the fees fixation committee was required after Justice V K Agrawal, who was originally recommended for the post by the MP High Court, recently expressed his inability to take up the assignment. Justice Agrawal is presently the chairman of the Chhattisgarh State Consumer Forum.

The confusion over this has been affecting students with the technical colleges collecting indiscriminate fees. Though the State Government warned the colleges that they should collect fees as per the recommendations made by Justice Shachindra Dwivedi Committee last year, the colleges have gone ahead with collecting fees as per their own calculation, citing the provisions of the Supreme Court order of August 12, 2005.

The Hindustan Times’ could not contact Justice Gulab Gupta on this matter despite several efforts.
