Retired Supreme Court Justice MB Shah on Saturday gave his approval to head the inquiry commission, appointed by Gujarat Government, to probe into the allegations of corruption against it by the Opposition Congress.
Gujarat government on August 17 appointed a one-man inquiry commission, to be headed by Justice Shah, to probe into the allegations by Congress which had earlier submitted a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil saying Modi government had indulged into corrupt practices and showing favoritism to select industrial houses.
"I have accepted to head the inquiry commission," Justice Shah told PTI.
Justice Shah's approval comes a day after Gujarat Governor Kamla appointed Justice (retd) RA Mehta as the Lokayukta, bypassing the state BJP government in the process.
The decision was challenged by the state government in the high court here.
The terms of reference of Shah commission includes allegations of Congress regarding, favoritism towards certain industrial houses, state government's negligence in this regard, if any, besides any other allegations the inquiry commission deems fit to inquire.
The panel will also study and compare with other states the manner in which land had been allocated to industry, analyse sales tax/commercial taxes, stamp duty and all tax concessions and difference of the taxes in other states vis-à-vis Gujarat.
