Walk-in candidates are prevented by protesters
PRESIDENT A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has asked the medicos agitating against the proposed OBC quotas to end their hunger strike, assuring them that the number of seats in central educational institutions will be increased.
The assurance came when student delegations from various universities met him on the issue of reservation on Wednesday.
Agitating students, meanwhile, thwarted the government's ad-hoc recruitment drive at DDU, GTB, LNJP, Safdurjung and GB Pant hospitals.
Shaily Chaterjee had come from Kolkata after hearing of the recruitment drive. But when she reached GB Pant for the interview, agitating doctors convinced her to join their cause. "They have a reason," said Chaterjee. "They promised me that when there are openings here, they would offer the job to us."
The walk-in interviews also failed because of the unenthusiastic response to the advertisements. After the day's labour, only nine doctors were hired — six of them at LNJP.
Most students who came for the interviews had applied for the post of junior resident doctors. Only three applicants turned up at Safdurjung -- all of them joined the agitation after interacting with the protesting medicos. At GB Pant, of the 16 applicants who came for the interview, 13 were convinced by the protesters to stay away. Of the 31 who reached LNJP, 25 joined the agitating students, six appeared for the interview.
