Former union minister and Congress leader Gurudas Kamat stirred up a hornet’s nest on Tuesday by saying that Prime Minister Modi, while launching the Beti Bachao campaign, should first give justice to his estranged wife Jashodaben.

He alleged that the BJP’s policies about women empowerment were nothing but hypocrisy.

Speaking at a protest march organised by the city Congress unit against the BJP at Azad Maidan, Kamat said BJP affiliates had undertaken Ghar Wapsi for people from other religions but Modi had failed to do justice to his own wife who was living a miserable life.

“By launching initiatives like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, the BJP-led government at the Centre is boasting of women empowerment but all such programmes are only hypocrisy. Modi’s wife still travels by auto-rickshaws and lives a humble life. Modi should first bring his wife home,” he said.

Kamat also raised questions over the elevation of certain women leaders in the party. He asked why first time MP Smriti Irani was inducted in the cabinet and favoured over other senior ministers.
