Investigators said Shiva Pawar (30) — a history-sheeter with 37 cases including housebreaking, assaulting, eve teasing and molestation registered against him across various police stations in the western suburbs — was considered a nuisance in the area.

The Samta Nagar police’s remand application filed with a court in Borivli, says Pawar had just returned from the police station after being questioned in a housebreaking case.

The five men barged into Pawar’s house in Wadarwada near Samta Nagar on Wednesday afternoon.

They pulled him out of the house and began beating him with bamboo sticks, grievously injuring one of his legs. Shiva ran from the area with the fractured leg, followed by the accused, and finally stopped at an open ground, 200 metres away.

The police reached the spot in 10 minutes, and rushed him to Bhagwati Hospital, where he was declared dead on admission, said Senior Police Inspector Anant Shengde.

He said the final trigger for the incident was when Pawar slapped the brother of one of the accused on Monday, after which they had reportedly been searching for him.

“The accused on that day had even got into scuffle with Shiva’s father for bailing him out every time he committed some offence,” said Shengde.

On Thursday, the arrested accused, identified as Suresh Pawar (34), Ravi Shinge (20), Vivek Shinge (29) and Tanaji Shinge (37), were presented in a metropolitan court, which sent them to the police custody till June 15.
