One person was killed and several others including police personnel were injured on Sunday in communal clashes at Bheetergaon near Kanpur.
Frenzied mob also burnt down several houses, shops and vehicles besides pelting stones on each other. Police said fire-arms were also used by the rioters.
As the situation worsened, police fired blank shots to disperse the rioters who also targetted security personnel with stones and brickbats. Six police personnel were injured in stone-pelting by the mob.
Bheetergaon is around 50 km from Kanpur, one of Uttar Pradesh’s biggest cities.
The violence was apparently a fall-out of an incident in which two minor boys, aged 14 and 12 years, belonging to a community were beaten up after they were allegedly caught stealing from a house in the village two days ago, additional district magistrate (city) Avinash Singh said.
An irate mob barged into the house of the minor boys on Sunday and assaulted them up, severely injuring them while some set ablaze houses and shops in which four persons received severe burn injuries.
One shop-owner succumbed to his burn injuries sustained during the violence, Kanpur district magistrate (DM) Roshan Jacob said. Police have arrested 13 persons in this connection.
Meanwhile, a year after communal clashes shattered peace in Muzaffarnagar, the troubled western Uttar Pradesh district is on the boil again as the death anniversary of two cousins and another person approaches.
The cousins were lynched by a mob in Kawal village on August 28 when they were allegedly trying to escape after killing a man who had harassed their sister. The cousins and the suspected harasser were from different communities.
The clansmen of the cousins have declared they want to conduct a ‘homage programme’ at their hamlet in Malikpura in Kawal.
The minority community, meanwhile, intends to carry out a concrete construction the same day at the grave of the person killed by the cousins.
The killing of three persons last year had led to communal riots which claimed the lives of 61 persons and rendered more than 50,000 homeless.
