The governor, who is also the chancellor of the university, accepted Suri’s resignation with immediate effect and directed him to hand over the charge to university registrar VP Kannaujia.

Suri has been on leave for the past one week in Kullu in Himachal Pradesh and Kannaujia has already taken over charge.

There was a controversy around Suri last month when he did not permit Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi to meet the students on October 24, allegedly under pressure from the state government.

Earlier, the university students invited Rahul Gandhi for an interactive session at the university’s auditorium. But Suri abruptly cancelled the visit and got the auditorium and the main entrance locked out.

Gandhi, however, visited the university without the security arrangements that he was entitled to as the state administration allegedly withdrew his security. He met the students at the university cafeteria and later accused the state government of being vindictive.
