First the daughter and now DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi himself faces land grab charges.
On Monday, local administration minister KP Munnuswamy alleged in the assembly that the former chief minister had encroached on land behind his Gopalapuram residence and promised action to retrieve the land.
The land in question is located behind his residence in the posh central Chennai colony of Gopalapuram and measures 780 square feet, on which stand quarters for security guards. The said land was assigned to Karunanidhi for Rs 3250.
In 1969, on the request of Karunanidhi the allotment was cancelled and the money was advised to be refunded.
“Despite the cancellation, it is still in possession of Karunanidhi. In 1978, he had requested reassigning of the land but no decision was taken by Chennai Corporation,” the minister said.
In 2003, the civic body had adopted a resolution to seek retrieval of the land for government use, but no action was taken. “The land continues to be used by Mr Karunanidhi and we will initiate all legal steps to retrieve encroached land as well as those detected by the government,” Munnuswamy said in response to a motion moved by an AIADMK legislator.
The target of the government is also the DMK headquarters, where too allegations of encroachment have been leveled.
