Move over mehndi. Karva Chauth in the Capital is now about specialised nail art, complete with thaalis and diyas for designs! The festival, being observed all over North India today, sees married women praying for their husband’s long life and celebrating matrimony by adorning themselves with the traditional mehndi, bangles and bridal attire. But this time, the herbal mehndi has been replaced by hi-tech nail treatments.

“Nail art has definitely taken precedence over mehndi. Initially, only a niche crowd went for it, but now, everybody wants it. In the past two days, we have been getting a customer for nail art around every hour,” says Pammy Kaul of Scratch Nails Limited, GK2.

The hottest trends: 3D designs, crystals and glitter. “The Karva Chauth ki Thali and diya are the most popular designs. Bright bridal colours such as maroons and reds are also popular,” says Sunil Bajaj of Kiana Nail Academy in Naraina. Even the less experimental are not lagging behind. “Those who’re looking for something subtle are going in for French extensions with very soft mehndi patterns,” says Simar Sukhija of Simar’s Nail Bar in Khan Market.
