Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive during the 26/11 terror strikes, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to the 86 charges he faces. “Yeh sab kuchh galat hai, mujhe kabool nahi (All this is wrong, I don’t accept it),” he said.
When Special Judge ML Tahiliani asked him in Hindi whether he pleaded guilty or not, Kasab merely shook his head. But when the judge insisted he speak, Kasab smiled broadly and replied in his Punjabi-accented Hindi.
Two other accused, Faheem Ansari (31) and Sabauddin Shaikh (25), also pleaded not guilty. The charges were divided into three main groups — common to all three, acts committed by Kasab and his slain partner Ismail Khan, and independent charges against Kasab.
Kasab was charged on seven counts of murder as the forensic laboratory has successfully linked his AK-47 with bullets recovered from seven bodies. Together with Khan, Kasab is thought to have killed 72 people but he was charged with the deaths of all 166 who died during the attacks.
The duo killed 56 passengers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus alone. They also killed three high-ranking policemen and others at Cama Hospital.
