Kashmir remained tense and large parts of Srinagar under curfew for second consecutive day on Wednesday over the killing of two youth in the army firing in Budgam district on Monday evening.
In the wake of clashes between protesters and security forces in parts of the old city and in the outskirts of Srinagar in Nowgam areas yesterday, the authorities decided to impose curfew in seven police stations on Wednesday.
“There will be curfew in areas falling under police stations Khanyar, Nowhatta, Mahraj Gunj, Rainawari, Safakadal and Nowgam. The measure has been taken to maintain law and order," said senior superintendent of police, Srinagar, Amit Kumar.
Security forces blocked streets in the city with concertina wires, deployed fully geared anti-riot personnel to keep protesters at bay.
Two youth died when the army fired at a vehicle near Chattergam area after it failed to stop at two check points. Two others were injured in the incident. The army has initiated an inquiry into the incident.
Separatist groups, moderate and hardline Hurriyat, have called for a shutdown, which has brought life to a halt in most districts in Kashmir valley. There was a thin traffic on the roads, shops and offices remained closed.

{{/usCountry}}Both Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Geelani have been placed under house arrest. JKLF chief Yasin Malik, lodged in the Anantnag jail, has also called for a shutdown.
