“ The painter has been persistantly insulting Hindu deities like Sita and Sarswati by painting them in an obscene manner. It is the duty of the Union Government to withdraw awards extended to him earlier and to initiate legal action against him as per the Constitution for hurting the religious feelings of the Hindu community,” he said.

Talking to mediapersons at the Circuit House here, Katiyar accused the Union and State governments of creating an atmosphere of communalism by allowing members of a particular community to damage public property to protest against the cartoon of Prophet Mohammad published in a Danish newspaper.

“We are respectful to each and every religion but violent protest causing loss to government and public property for a specific religion is not fair”, he said, adding that a violent mob attacked a procession of Hindus in Muzaffarnagar observing bandh to protest against the irresponsible statement of minister Yakoob Qureshi.

“It was at the behest of the Union and State governments”, he said .

He added that Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav should drop the controversial minister from his council of ministers or else the Governor must intervene and dismiss the minister with recommendations of criminal case against him.

Lashing out at the Union Government, he said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was hatching a conspiracy to frame senior leaders of the BJP in connection with demolition of Babri mosque, by pressurising the CBI.

Commenting on the import of wheat, he said there was no shortage of wheat in the country and the decision had been taken to benefit the middlemen at the cost of Indian farmers. He also demanded the cancellation of contract for import of wheat.
