Kerala Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan has incurred the wrath of Muslim organisations and political parties for stating that there was an effort by fundamentalists to convert the state into a Muslim majority.
Sinking their differences almost all Muslim organisations have dubbed his statement as “dangerous”. Some of his party leaders are equally upset with his sweeping remarks.
The CM defended his statement in the assembly on Monday saying that people were out to misinterpret his remarks. He said his intention was to expose the subversive activities carried out by the PFI based on the evidences recovered by the police.
Addressing a news conference in New Delhi on Saturday, the CM had accused a hardcore Muslim outfit, Popular Front of India (PFI), and its allies of planning to turn Kerala into a Muslim-majority state within 20 years by doling out money.
“They lure youngsters offering money. They are also encouraged to marry girls from other communities. They want to make this a Muslim-majority state in another 10 or 20 years,” he said while talking about PFI activities in the state.
What baffled Muslim leaders and others was that the statement came at an inappropriate time. Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said his statement at this juncture was uncalled for. “We have extended all help to the government for getting rid of anti-national elements. But we never expected such a careless statement from him in return, putting the entire community under a shadow” he said. “It is a shame. No responsible leader will make such a statement,” Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed said.
