Bhaskara M Karanavar (65), who had come from the US to Chengannur and had been staying with his son's family for the last few months, was found murdered in the house last Sunday. Investigation by a police team led by I G Winson M Paul found the involvement of Karanavar's daughter-in-law Sherin in the murder.

She was being questioned by the police since Monday and the arrest was recorded yesterday. Police said a group of three persons killed Karanavar by strangling and suffocating him under the instruction of Sherin. Police had received clues about the accused and they would be arrested soon, the sources said.

Police did not reveal the reasons behind the murder but it was suspected that money and property was the motive. Articles worth Rs 1.25 lakh including a laptop were stolen from the room of Karanavar on the day of the murder. Sherin was produced before the Chengannur Munsiff First Class Magistrate Hafiz Mohammed and was remanded to judicial custody. Police said the probe would continue to ascertain whether more people were involved in the murder.
