Kerala docs go on strike, demand higher pay

However, emergency services have been exempted from the strike.

The public health-care system in Kerala was hit as a majority of doctors in government hospitals went on a 24-hour strike on Wednesday morning demanding higher wages.

Reports from across the state said doctors in taluk and district hospitals joined the strike called by the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA).

However, emergency services have been exempted from the strike.

KGMOA office-bearers said the doctors were forced to resort to the strike as the government refused to pay heed to repeated pleas for rectifying anomalies in pay-scales.

Health Minister PK Sreemathy had on Tuesday said that the government would take steps to ensure that the health-care system was not paralysed due to the strike.
