Speaker G Karthikeyan, through a ruling on Monday, allowed MLAs to use i-pads and laptops to assist them in their speeches.

The Speaker asked the MLAs not to misuse the facility and utilise it for improving their performance in the House.

"We are living in a hi-tech era and so, the chair did not think it is proper to turn back new technology. But the misuse of such instrument in the House should be avoided," he said.

Karhtikeyan gave the ruling against a point of order by T N Prathapan of Congress asking whether it was proper to use laptops in the House.

He was referring to the use of laptop by CPI-M member and former Finance Minister Thomas Issac during a speech last week.
