IT WAS another first for the King George’s Medical University.

It missed the annual Saraswati Puja for the first time since it became a tradition on the campus over the last couple of decades. Initially, Saraswati Puja used to be held at the Browne Hall. Eight years ago, it was shifted to the lawns in front of the VL Hostel.
Grand pandals and traditional puja formed a part of occasion. Undergraduates and post-graduates, along with faculty members, participated in the celebrations.
This year, students were away from the campus as academic closure was enforced sine die from January 20.
Fresh hostel allotments are on and regular classes will be held only after February 6. Moreover, the vice- chancellor is not on the campus. A holiday was declared even for the administrative wing of the varsity.
Senior faculty members were upset about the miss.
“It was an integral part of the varsity’s tradition. Seeking the goddess of learning’s blessings is the right of a student and even the faculty,” said a senior faculty member who joined the university in the 60s.
Incidentally, there have been many firsts for the KGMU in the recent past.
