A veteran of more than 20 Tests, he was the first Bangladeshi player to have played more than 50 One-Day Internationals.

He is Bangladesh's first choice wicket-keeper and is also a dependable and agressive lower middle order bat.

He assumed the captaincy from Naimur Rahman in November 2001 but resigned in 2003 following Bangladesh's disastrous showing in the World Cup.
