Khar residents run the extra green mile

Union Park residents have adopted a civic garden and will be redeveloping it. Congress MP Priya Dutt and MLA Baba Siddique laid the foundation stone for the project, reports Bhavika Jain.

Picture this: a landscape garden, children’s playing area, green compost pit, rainwater-harvesting centre, walking track and gazebo — and all this lit by solar panels.

This pretty, pollution-free picture will soon be reality and the once ignored municipal garden at Union Park in Khar get a much-needed facelift.

Union Park residents have adopted a civic garden and will be redeveloping it. Congress MP Priya Dutt and MLA Baba Siddique laid the foundation stone for the project on Sunday.

Residents plan to call it the Union Park ‘eco-garden’ as all water, manure and other inputs needed for the garden will be generated at the garden itself.

“We are launching a campaign called ‘Jago Mumbai’ to do our bit to contribute to the environment and also deal with the energy shortage faced by our city,” said Navin Chandra, chairman, projects, Union Park Residents Association. The project will cost Rs 40 lakh and funds have been allocated from the MLA’s funds. The campaign aims to motivate residents to recycle waste, use solar energy, and capture and recycle water through rainwater harvesting techniques.

Work on the garden will start in a week and be completed in three months. Residents will maintain the garden.
