A rescue operation by the Army, police and fire brigade, supervised by the Agra district magistrate and assisted by doctors from SN Medical College succeeded in taking the Vandana out of her nightmare.

Dr NC Prajapati, principal of SN Medical College said, “Vandana is fine but will be under four hours’ observation at the emergency department of the medical college hospital.”

The rescue operation involved machines digging a 50-foot ditch next to the borewell to carve out a tunnel to reach the trapped girl, little Vandana was provided oxygen through a tube and supplied with biscuits, water and dry fruits under medical supervision.

Vandana fell into the borewell while playing with a cousin near her house. Her family and their neighbours informed the district administration of Vandana’s plight after they failed to rescue the child.

Vandana responded by crying, particularly when her father called out to her. As night fell, the delicate rescue efforts slowed down to ensure that nothing went wrong which may pose a threat to the child’s life.

A team of doctors on standby was keeping fingers crossed, hoping that food items and glucose sent down were being consumed by the girl. The cries of the girl could be heard intermittently through the day in encouraging signs of her health. There were also fears of suffocation and heat beneath the pit.

Prayers were offered at temples and mosques across several cities in UP for Vandana’s safety.
