Defence dilemma

The report Massacre at Daryaganj bank (March 12) should serve as a wake-up call to the Centre to tackle sexual harassment among defence personnel. The army and the paramilitary forces have singularly failed to address this vexing issue. The toll that long duty hours away from families has on the forces is a longstanding problem. Any delay will harm morale of the armed forces even more.

Sitaram Yechury in The struggling billion (March 15) is not convincing. What explanation does he have for the killing of farmers by the West Bengal police? Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is Yechury’s comrade. In whose interest is he working?

Abhishek Singhvi in To make India shine (March 14) has made a noble plea. But Singhvi should first extend this plea to his Congress colleagues. A contribution of 1 per cent of their total assets will set a shining example for us to emulate.

Root out the rot

The editorial Money can be useful (March 14), rightly suggests a thorough review before hiking the annual allowance in MPLADS. If the government is serious about proper utilisation of funds, the scheme must ensure no room for swindlers.
