The accused, Jai Shankar, 30, is the paternal uncle of the victim's father. Earlier, Class-10 girl's father Hemant Kumar, mother Gayatri Devi and paternal uncle Khilari were arrested on May 8. A court remanded Shankar to 14-day judicial custody.

On May 4, the girl was allegedly killed by her family after they came to know of her affair with her classmate. The family had cremated the girl in the wee hours of May 5 and then went to Garhmukteshwar in Uttar Pradesh to immerse the ashes. The parents told the police that by doing so, they wanted to wash their 'sin'.

The police later found entries of girl's death entries in the register of the person who had performed religious duties in the case in Garhmukteshwar and also given death certificate to the family.

The girl was in a relationship with her classmate from a nearby village and had eloped with him on April 11. The police traced her on April 13. When produced before a court the next day, she refused to go with her parents. On April 22, she went with her paternal aunt who lived in Bhiwani district.
