A mob vandalised Chanchol rural hospital in Malda following the death of a youth on Thursday.

Barun Roy (36), resident of Kapasia village under Harishchandrapur PS in Malda and a daily labourer by profession, was admitted to the rural hospital on Monday evening with severe stomach ache. On Wednesday night, when his condition deteriorated, nursing staff administered an injection following which Roy died.

On Thursday morning, when the news spread in the area, his relatives, along with other locals, vandalised the health centre. They damaged a number of medical equipment and furniture in the hospital. Several windows and doors of the hospital were also broken.

Later, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

The deceased’s wife, Siya Roy, said, “My husband was brought to this facility with severe stomach ache on Monday. The doctors advised some pathological test, but those couldn’t be done on Tuesday because all the local private labs were closed on the occasion of bhai phonta. The hospital authorities didn’t help us to get the tests done at the health centre.”

“Doctors told us that there is water in his stomach so he is in pain, but it is not a serious problem,” Siya added.

“The doctors and nursing staff of this hospital are responsible for the death of my husband. I want the culprits to be punished,” Siya alleged.
